Our home is where we spend most of our time and generally where we feel the most comfortable. However, according to the National Council on Aging, more than 75 percent of falls occur at home. Your home should be where you feel safe without worrying about getting hurt. There are many changes you can make to the home that will help avoid falls and keep you feeling safe.

 

Kitchen

  • Keep all of your most used items within reach. Getting things up high or out of reach can easily cause a fall, so ensure everything you need is easily accessible. This will help you avoid using step stools or chairs to grab things where you could lose your balance.
  • Remember to clean up spills as soon as possible. Having wet or dirty floors is another easy way to slip and fall.

 

Stairs

  • Have handrails on both sides of the stairs and make sure they are tight. Using handrails while going up and down the stairs is an excellent way to stay safe and have something to hold.
  • Lights at the top and bottom of the stairs are necessary too. Using the stairs in the dark will increase your chance of falling.

 

Bathrooms

  • Non-slip rubber mats in the shower have good traction, making it easier to keep your balance.
  • Grab bars next to the toilet. Installing these next to the toilet provides support and balance while getting up and sitting down. Don’t use towel racks as a grab bar, but you can use a grab bar as a towel rack.

Bedrooms

  • Keep a night light on to ensure you can see.
  • Keep a phone within arm’s reach in case of emergency.
  • Make sure there is a clear pathway from your bed to the bathroom and from your bed to the door.

 

Living areas

  • Make sure all cords and wires are out of the way.
  • Keep the items you use the most within reach.
  • Have your furniture arranged so nothing is in your way when walking.
  • Make sure all carpets and rugs are secured to the floor and will not move.
